Grimms' Fairy Tales

Grimms' Fairy Tales is a seminal collection of German folktales compiled by brothers Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm, first published in 1812 as Children's and Household Tales (German: Kinder- und Hausmärchen, commonly abbreviated as KHM). Emerging during the Romantic movement, the Grimms sought to preserve oral traditions they believed embodied authentic German culture and language. Drawing from storytellers, literary sources, and regional traditions, the collection includes enduring tales such as “Cinderella,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Snow White.” Though initially intended as a scholarly work of folklore and philology, the collection became one of the most influential works of world literature and a foundational text in the study of mythology, folklore, and fairytales.

The following index provides a comprehensive list of the fairytales appearing within Grimms' Fairy Tales, listed by ordering within the first and second volume of the 1850 Edition. Each tale's corresponding Aarne-Thompson type is provided to the right.

Notes on Notation

KHM = Kinder- und Hausmärchen (e.g. KHM 81 would mean the 81st tale in Grimms' Fairy Tales, according to the 1850 Edition). German or English titles of the Grimm tales given where appropriate.

KHM 62a = Appeared as the 62nd tale in the First Edition (1812), but was later redacted.
